Interviewing to Win a Job
Applying for a job can be intimidating if you've never done it before. And even if it's not your first job interview, the process can still be anxiety producing. Listed below are some tips we have garnered over the years of our business that we believe will help when you go for that job interview.
Personal Appearance. You never get a second chance to make a first impression so make sure you dress to impress. Below are some dress code tips.
- Business casual is usually the best style to wear
- Clean, polished conservative shoes (leave your sandals at home!)
- Well-groomed contemporary hairstyle
- Clean, trimmed fingernails (polished if female)
- Minimal cologne or perfume; don't overpower the interviewer
- Empty pockets to avoid bulges or coins rattling
- No gum chewing, eating candy, or smoking during the interview
Body Language. It begins even before you say your first word in an interview. As the interviewer walks toward you to shake hands, an opinion is already being formed. And as you sit waiting to answer questions, you are being judged by your appearance, posture and demeanor.
- Be confident. You are the best person for the position!
- Make eye contact with the interviewer during the interview, especially when answering questions.
- Smile, relax and be yourself.
- Your handshake should be firm but not bone-crushing.
- Stand and sit erect.
Remembering these tips can give you a definite advantage in any interview situation. Also, don't leave your sense of humor at home. And if at first you don't succeed, hang in there and keep at it.
